Chapter Four: Emily Follows Me Home

I came out of the water refreshed. The ocean at this time of year is perfect. It’s almost transparent, with no weed or other debris, and the temperature is halfway between bracing and comfortable.

My mood improved even further as I returned to where I’d left my towel and found Emily setting out her towel near mine. She wore a pair of teal green bikinis, and my mind flashed back to our time together and the beauty hidden by those tiny triangles of cloth.

“Hello, Stranger,” I greeted her, “long time no see.”

“Hello yourself,” she replied in a teasing singsong, “I’m sorry, I had to go and stay with my Mum, she was ill.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that,” I said, my tone less playful, “is she alright?”

“She’s fine now,” Emily said, “she’s a tough old bird. I’m sorry. I should have messaged you, but I don’t have your number. You probably thought I’d ghosted you.”

That was precisely what I thought, but I couldn’t exactly say that; after all, she was married to another man, and we hadn’t exactly been dating. I didn’t think I had any right to be kept in the loop.

“Life is busy; it’s no big deal,” I shrugged as nonchalantly as I could muster, “would you like my number?”

“I woouuuld,” Emily stretched the word to soften the blow, “but Frank might see my phone and the things I’ve wanted to message you in the last few weeks; well, they’d end my marriage.

“Ah, yeah, that makes sense,” I conceded, “it’s a shame though; I’d like to have seen those messages.”

“Probably for the best,” Emily said, “I’m sorry, I think I made a mistake; I shouldn’t have brought you into it. I need to sort out things with Frank; it’s complicated.”

“Yeah, I get it,” I told her, “I don’t want to cause trouble for you.”

I didn’t get it at all. One minute, a beautiful woman invites you into her home, engages in mind-bending sex, disappears for a month, and shows up again, telling you she wanted to sext with you before telling you that you were a big mistake, and that will be that.

“Thanks for being so understanding, Jay,” she said, smiling despite the fact that she’d just ripped my nuts off.

I said my goodbyes and set off home, trying to look at the silver lining. She’d enjoyed herself; she wanted more, but she just wanted to stay married. That’s fair.

I wish this run of good luck with beautiful women would result in an encore. A man could start to doubt himself.

I made a coffee and sat at my desk to work on a report. No sooner had I opened the document than the doorbell rang. Cursing the interruption, I went to answer the door.

I swung the door open, expecting to be sold cookies or religion; it was better than any of that. Emily stood at the door, her aqua bikini barely covered by a beach wraparound, her eyes smouldering at me.
